X Ray

X Ray

Overview

X-ray is a widely used diagnostic imaging technique that employs controlled amounts of ionising radiation to produce images of internal structures, primarily bones, joints, and certain soft tissues. It is one of the most common and accessible imaging modalities, playing a critical role in the evaluation, diagnosis, and monitoring of a broad range of medical conditions, including fractures, infections, arthritis, lung diseases, and dental abnormalities.

During an X-ray examination, the patient is positioned between an X-ray source and a detector or film. The X-rays pass through the body and are absorbed differently by various tissues based on their density. Bones, being dense, appear white on the resulting image, while soft tissues and air-filled spaces appear in shades of grey or black. Modern digital X-ray systems provide immediate, high-resolution images with lower radiation exposure compared to traditional film-based X-rays. X-ray is commonly used in orthopaedics to assess fractures, dislocations, and bone alignment, in pulmonology for detecting pneumonia, tuberculosis, or lung masses, and in cardiology for evaluating heart size or the presence of pulmonary oedema. It is also employed in dental practice, emergency care, and preoperative assessment. Specialised techniques such as contrast X-rays can visualise blood vessels, the gastrointestinal tract, or the urinary system in detail.

The procedure is quick, generally painless, and non-invasive. Safety measures, including shielding and dose optimisation, ensure minimal radiation exposure. X-ray images are interpreted by radiologists who provide accurate diagnostic information to guide clinical decision-making. By offering fast, precise, and cost-effective imaging, X-rays remain a cornerstone of medical diagnostics. They enable early detection of abnormalities, assist in treatment planning, and contribute significantly to effective patient care and improved clinical outcomes.
