Sports Medicine

Sports Medicine

Overview

Sports Medicine is a specialised healthcare service dedicated to the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of sports- and exercise-related injuries. The department caters not only to professional athletes but also to recreational sports participants, fitness enthusiasts, and individuals with activity-related musculoskeletal conditions. The primary goal of sports medicine is to restore optimal physical function, enhance performance, and prevent future injuries through comprehensive and personalised care.

Common conditions managed include muscle strains, ligament sprains, tendon injuries, fractures, dislocations, overuse injuries, and sports-related joint problems involving the knee, shoulder, ankle, elbow, and spine. The department also addresses conditions such as sports-related concussions, stress injuries, and exercise-induced pain. Accurate diagnosis is achieved through detailed clinical evaluation supported by advanced imaging modalities such as X-ray, ultrasound, MRI, and CT scans when required.

Treatment strategies in sports medicine emphasise minimally invasive and non-surgical approaches whenever possible. These include activity modification, medication, targeted physiotherapy, sports-specific rehabilitation programs, and injury-prevention training. Interventional procedures such as image-guided injections, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy, and other regenerative treatments may be offered to promote healing and accelerate recovery. Surgical intervention is recommended only when conservative management fails.

Rehabilitation plays a central role in sports medicine services. Customised physiotherapy programs focus on pain relief, strength building, flexibility, balance, and coordination. Return-to-sport protocols are carefully designed to ensure safe and gradual resumption of athletic activities while minimising the risk of re-injury. Performance assessment and biomechanical analysis further support long-term athletic health.

The Sports Medicine department works closely with orthopaedics, physiotherapy, radiology, nutrition, and psychology services to provide holistic care. With an emphasis on safe recovery, performance optimisation, and injury prevention, the department supports individuals in maintaining an active and healthy lifestyle.
