Overview

The Department of Radiation Oncology under the Ramaiah Institute of Oncosciences aims to provide high-quality radiation therapy for our patients' comprehensive cancer care. Our doctors have specialised training in performing radiation treatment for people with cancer and those with certain non-cancerous (benign) condition

We follow an evidence-based approach and use state-of-the-art high-end equipment, such as TrueBeam LINAC teletherapy machine, Brachytherapy, and Intraoperative Radiation Therapy (IORT) machines, to deliver our treatment. This specialised expertise and a multidisciplinary tumour board decision ensure precision treatment and enhanced clinical outcomes.

Intra-operative radiotherapy (IORT) at Ramaiah Institute of Oncosciences is one of the first in Asia, with the first patient being treated in 2024. This technology's special and unique feature involves delivering large doses of ionising radiation to the tumour/tumour bed. In contrast, the tumour site is still exposed during surgery.

The significant Advantages of IORT are as follows:

IORT has added to the armamentarium of radiation technologies available at Ramaiah Memorial Hospital. We treat around 100 patients every day on LINAC TRUEBEAM VARIAN & ELEKTA SYNERGY AGILITY using conventional to advanced techniques, including stereotactic radiation therapy.

HDR Brachytherapy is a form of conformal radiation used extensively in gynaecological cancers, where we have treated over 1000 patients in a span of a few years.

Performed along with surgery so that anesthesia is used only one time.

The typical structures are pushed away from the tumor bed so that the dose to these areas is reduced, and in turn, the duration of external radiation is reduced.

IORT has opportunities for dose escalation beyond EBRT dose and re-irradiation in recurrent cancers where EBRT may not be possible.

Since it is a low-energy X-ray (50kV), the exposure to the staff is almost nil and requires minimal shielding.

Recently, it has emerged as an attractive treatment option for early breast cancer as well as selected locally advanced breast cancer, the main advantage being the ability to reduce the duration of external radiation.

The waiting period following surgery to enable post-operative recovery, the surgical scar to heal, and the prolonged external beam radiation treatment of 4-6 weeks following surgery are avoided, forming added benefits of IORT.

In the same sitting during surgery, the radiation treatment is completed. Sometimes, it is combined with EBRT based on the stage and diagnosis.

It is used in a wide variety of sites such as breast cancer, locally advanced and recurrent rectal cancer, retroperitoneal sarcomas, soft tissue sarcomas, pancreatic cancer, gynaecologic and genito-urinary and recurrent malignancies.
