Overview

The Department of Surgical Oncology at Ramaiah Memorial Hospital is a specialised unit dedicated to the surgical diagnosis, staging, treatment, and long-term management of cancer. Operating within the Ramaiah Institute of Oncosciences, our team brings together subspecialty surgical expertise, advanced technology, and a philosophy rooted in precision oncology — ensuring that every patient receives care that is as tailored to them as it is to their cancer.

Cancer surgery is not a single decision — it is a series of carefully considered steps, guided by science, shaped by experience, and centred on the person in front of us

We recognise that no two cancers are alike. Tumour type, size, grade, stage, and location all influence the surgical approach — as do the patient’s age, overall fitness, comorbidities, and personal goals. Our team takes the time to understand each of these factors before recommending a course of action, because a truly tailored treatment plan begins long before the operating room.

Central to our practice is a multidisciplinary model of care. Every case at Ramaiah is reviewed by a dedicated tumour board — bringing together surgical oncologists, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, radiologists, pathologists, and supportive care specialists. This collective expertise ensures that surgical decisions are made in the full context of a patient’s overall treatment strategy, never in isolation.

Our surgical repertoire spans the full spectrum of oncological technique — from minimally invasive laparoscopic and robotic procedures to complex open resections, reconstructions, and advanced intraperitoneal therapies such as CRS-HIPEC and PIPAC. Where oncologically appropriate, we favour a minimally invasive approach: less disruption to the body, faster recovery, and a quicker return to everyday life — without compromising on cancer control.

Beyond the operating theatre, our commitment extends to the entire care journey. From the first consultation and biopsy through surgery, recovery, and surveillance, patients at Ramaiah benefit from coordinated, continuous care by a team that remains invested in their outcomes at every stage.

Service & Facilities

Our department brings together subspecialty surgical expertise, state-of-the-art technology, and advanced procedural capabilities — all under one roof. Whether minimally invasive or complex open surgery, every intervention is performed with precision and full multidisciplinary support.

Head & neck oncosurgery - Thyroid, parathyroid, salivary gland, oral cavity, pharynx, and laryngeal cancers with functional preservation focus.

Breast oncosurgery - Oncoplastic techniques, sentinel node biopsy, and risk- reduction surgery tailored to tumour biology and patient choice.

Gastrointestinal oncosurgery - Colorectal, gastric, oesophageal, and small bowel cancers managed with precision resection and sphincter-preserving approaches.

HPB oncosurgery - Complex liver, pancreatic, biliary, and gall bladder surgery performed by dedicated hepatopancreaticobiliary specialists.

Gynaecologic oncosurgery - Ovarian, endometrial, cervical, and vulvar cancers managed in close collaboration with gynaecologic oncology.

Thoracic oncosurgery - Lung, pleural, and mediastinal tumours operated with video-assisted and robotic thoracoscopic techniques.

Robotic oncosurgery - Enhanced 3D visualisation, wristed instrumentation, and superior precision for complex minimally invasive cancer surgery.

Laparoscopic oncosurgery - Minimally invasive access across tumour types with reduced blood loss, shorter stay, and faster return to normal life.

Orthopaedic oncosurgery - Bone and soft tissue sarcomas managed with limb- salvage intent and multidisciplinary planning.

CRS – HIPEC & PIPEC - Cytoreductive surgery combined with hyperthermic or pressurised intraperitoneal chemotherapy for peritoneal surface malignancies.

Minimal access & robotic surgery — redefining cancer careOur robotic and minimal access surgical programme offers patients the benefits of enhanced precision, magnified 3D visualisation, and superior dexterity — all through the smallest possible incisions. The result: reduced blood loss, fewer complications, shorter hospital stays, and a faster recovery — without compromising oncological outcomes. For complex abdominal, pelvic, thoracic, and retroperitoneal cancers, robotic-assisted and laparoscopic surgery have become our preferred approach wherever it is safe and beneficial.
