Pediatric Rheumatology is a specialised medical service focused on the diagnosis and management of autoimmune, inflammatory, and musculoskeletal disorders affecting infants, children, and adolescents. These conditions are often chronic and complex, requiring early recognition and long-term, multidisciplinary care to prevent disability and ensure normal growth and development. The department addresses disorders such as juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA), systemic lupus erythematosus, juvenile dermatomyositis, vasculitis, scleroderma, periodic fever syndromes, and other connective tissue diseases. Children presenting with unexplained joint pain, swelling, stiffness, recurrent fever, rashes, muscle weakness, or fatigue are comprehensively evaluated through detailed clinical assessment and age-appropriate diagnostic investigations. The department utilises advanced laboratory testing, imaging studies such as ultrasound and MRI, and immunological markers to arrive at accurate diagnoses. Special attention is given to differentiating rheumatologic conditions from infections and orthopaedic disorders, which commonly mimic similar symptoms in children.
Management in Pediatric Rheumatology is holistic and child-centred. Treatment plans may include disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs (DMARDs), biologic therapies, corticosteroids, and supportive medications, administered according to internationally accepted treatment protocols. Close monitoring is carried out to assess disease activity, treatment response, and potential side effects, ensuring both safety and effectiveness.
The department works closely with physiotherapy, rehabilitation, ophthalmology, nephrology, and psychology services to provide comprehensive care. Physiotherapy and occupational therapy play a vital role in maintaining joint mobility, muscle strength, and functional independence. Psychological support and family counselling are integral components, helping children and caregivers cope with the emotional and social challenges of chronic illness.
With a focus on early intervention, long-term disease control, and improved quality of life, the Pediatric Rheumatology department aims to enable children with rheumatic diseases to achieve optimal physical health, academic participation, and social well-being.
