Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is an advanced, non-invasive diagnostic imaging technique that uses strong magnetic fields and radio waves to produce detailed images of internal body structures. MRI is essential for evaluating soft tissues, organs, bones, joints, brain, spinal cord, and blood vessels with exceptional clarity, without the use of ionising radiation. The department typically offers high-field 1.5 Tesla and ultra-high-field 3 Tesla MRI systems, enabling superior image quality, faster scan times, and advanced functional imaging capabilities.
MRI is widely used in neurology, orthopaedics, cardiology, oncology, and abdominal imaging. It helps detect brain and spinal cord disorders, ligament or tendon injuries, joint degeneration, cardiac anomalies, tumours, liver and kidney pathologies, and vascular abnormalities. The 3 Tesla MRI provides a higher signal-to-noise ratio, allowing more precise imaging, faster scanning, and advanced sequences such as functional MRI (fMRI), diffusion tensor imaging (DTI), and MR angiography. During the procedure, the patient lies on a motorised table that slides into the cylindrical MRI scanner. The scan is painless, and the patient is required to remain still to ensure high-quality images. Noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs are provided due to the loud sounds produced by the magnet. Contrast agents may be administered intravenously in certain cases to enhance the visualisation of blood vessels, tumours, or inflammatory lesions.
MRI services are complemented by radiologists trained in interpreting high-resolution images, ensuring accurate diagnosis and guiding treatment planning. The department strictly follows safety protocols to screen patients for metallic implants or pacemakers, minimising any risk associated with the strong magnetic field. By offering precise, radiation-free, and multi-planar imaging, MRI enhances early detection of disease, aids in complex surgical planning, monitors treatment response, and improves patient care across a wide spectrum of medical specialties
