Holter Monitoring is a non-invasive diagnostic procedure used to continuously record a patient’s heart rhythm over 24 to 48 hours, or longer if required. It is primarily used to detect and evaluate cardiac arrhythmias, intermittent palpitations, unexplained fainting (syncope), and other abnormalities that may not be captured during a standard electrocardiogram (ECG) performed in a clinic. Holter monitoring provides valuable insights into the heart’s electrical activity during daily activities and sleep. The procedure involves attaching small electrodes to the patient’s chest, connected to a portable recording device worn around the waist or over the shoulder. The device continuously records the heart’s electrical signals while the patient carries out their normal routine. Patients are instructed to maintain a diary of symptoms, activities, and any unusual events to help correlate heart rhythm changes with specific activities or complaints.
Holter monitoring is especially useful for detecting arrhythmias such as atrial fibrillation, ventricular tachycardia, bradycardia, premature ventricular or atrial contractions, and pauses in heart rhythm. It can also evaluate the effectiveness of medications, pacemaker function, and other cardiac therapies. After the monitoring period, the recorded data is analysed by cardiologists using specialised software to identify abnormal patterns and guide treatment decisions.
The procedure is safe, painless, and does not interfere with daily activities. Patients are advised to avoid activities that may damage the device or electrodes, such as showering or vigorous exercise. Holter monitoring results aid in diagnosis, risk assessment, and treatment planning, contributing to improved cardiac care and patient safety.
By providing continuous, real-world monitoring of heart rhythm, Holter Monitoring enables early detection of arrhythmias, accurate diagnosis, and personalised management, improving patient outcomes and long-term cardiovascular health.
