EP (Electrophysiology)

EP (Electrophysiology)

Overview

Electrophysiology (EP) is a highly specialised branch of cardiology focused on diagnosing and treating abnormal heart rhythms, also known as arrhythmias. The EP department evaluates the electrical conduction system of the heart, identifying the origin, mechanism, and severity of rhythm disturbances. Common conditions managed include atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, supraventricular tachycardia (SVT), ventricular tachycardia, and bradyarrhythmias.

EP studies are performed in a cardiac electrophysiology laboratory using minimally invasive, catheter-based techniques. During the procedure, thin, flexible catheters equipped with electrodes are inserted through blood vessels and guided to the heart under fluoroscopic imaging. These catheters record intracardiac electrical signals and, if needed, deliver pacing or ablation to correct abnormal rhythms. Diagnostic EP studies map the source of arrhythmias, while therapeutic interventions such as radiofrequency ablation, cryoablation, or device implantation restore normal heart rhythm.

The EP department also provides advanced cardiac device therapies, including pacemakers, implantable cardioverter-defibrillators (ICDs), and cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) devices. These devices help regulate heart rate, prevent sudden cardiac death, and improve cardiac function in patients with arrhythmias or heart failure.

EP procedures are conducted by highly trained electrophysiologists with a multidisciplinary support team including nurses, technologists, and anesthesiologists. Patient safety is ensured through continuous monitoring, sterile techniques, and adherence to international protocols. Post-procedure follow-up includes device checks, medication management, and lifestyle counselling to optimise long-term outcomes.

By combining cutting-edge technology with clinical expertise, the Electrophysiology department offers accurate diagnosis, minimally invasive treatment, and effective management of complex arrhythmias. These services enhance patient quality of life, reduce hospitalisation risk, and contribute significantly to cardiovascular health and longevity.
