EEG / Video EEG

EEG / Video EEG

Overview

Electroencephalography (EEG) and Video EEG are specialised diagnostic tests used to assess the electrical activity of the brain. EEG records the brain’s spontaneous electrical impulses through electrodes placed on the scalp, helping in the diagnosis and monitoring of neurological disorders. Video EEG combines standard EEG recording with simultaneous video monitoring to capture physical manifestations of abnormal brain activity, allowing precise correlation between clinical events and electrical patterns.

EEG is primarily used to evaluate seizure disorders, epilepsy, unexplained loss of consciousness, sleep disorders, encephalopathies, and brain dysfunctions following head injuries or infections. Video EEG is particularly valuable in complex cases, such as differentiating epileptic seizures from non-epileptic events, localising seizure foci for surgical planning, and assessing treatment response in refractory epilepsy.

The procedure is non-invasive, safe, and painless. Small electrodes are placed on the patient’s scalp using conductive gel, and electrical activity is recorded over a period ranging from 20 minutes to several hours, depending on the clinical requirement. In Video EEG, the patient’s behaviour, movements, and episodes are recorded on video simultaneously, providing a comprehensive view of events associated with abnormal brain activity.

EEG data is interpreted by neurologists or clinical neurophysiologists, analysing wave patterns, frequency, and abnormalities such as spikes, sharp waves, or slowing. Video EEG adds critical context, enabling clinicians to correlate electrical events with symptoms, improving diagnostic accuracy and guiding therapy. It is an essential tool for pre-surgical evaluation in patients considered for epilepsy surgery.

EEG and Video EEG services are integrated with neurology, pediatric neurology, and epilepsy programs. By providing detailed insights into brain function, these tests assist in accurate diagnosis, treatment planning, and monitoring, helping patients achieve better seizure control, improved quality of life, and optimal neurological health
