Cytopathology

Cytopathology

Overview

Cytopathology is a specialised branch of pathology that focuses on the study and diagnosis of diseases at the cellular level. It involves the examination of individual cells or small clusters of cells obtained from various body sites, including blood, body fluids, fine-needle aspirates, exfoliative smears, and brushings. Cytopathology plays a crucial role in the early detection of cancers, precancerous conditions, infectious diseases, and inflammatory disorders.

The most common applications of cytopathology include Pap smears for cervical cancer screening, fine-needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) for evaluating lumps in the thyroid, breast, lymph nodes, and other organs, as well as analysis of pleural, peritoneal, and cerebrospinal fluids. Cytological examination allows rapid, minimally invasive diagnosis, often guiding further diagnostic procedures or therapeutic interventions.

Specimens are collected carefully to preserve cellular morphology, then processed, stained, and examined under a microscope by trained cytopathologists. Modern techniques, including immunocytochemistry and molecular cytology, enhance the accuracy of diagnosis by identifying specific markers for malignancy or infection. Digital cytology and automated imaging systems further improve efficiency and diagnostic precision.

Cytopathology is particularly valuable for early cancer detection, monitoring recurrence, and assessing treatment response. It reduces the need for more invasive surgical biopsies in many cases, making the diagnostic process safer and quicker for patients. Integration with histopathology, radiology, and clinical findings ensures comprehensive evaluation and accurate diagnosis. By providing rapid, accurate, and minimally invasive cellular-level analysis, cytopathology contributes significantly to early disease detection, precise diagnosis, and effective patient management. It is an essential component of modern diagnostic services and preventive healthcare programs.
