Clinical Biochemistry

Clinical Biochemistry

Overview

Clinical Biochemistry, also known as chemical pathology, is a specialized branch of laboratory medicine that focuses on the analysis of blood, urine, and other body fluids to evaluate metabolic and biochemical functions. It plays a vital role in diagnosing, monitoring, and managing a wide range of medical conditions, including endocrine disorders, kidney and liver diseases, cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, electrolyte imbalances, and metabolic syndromes.

The primary focus of clinical biochemistry is the quantitative and qualitative assessment of substances such as enzymes, hormones, proteins, lipids, electrolytes, glucose, and metabolites in body fluids. Common tests include liver function tests, kidney function tests, blood glucose and glycated haemoglobin (HbA1c), lipid profile, thyroid function tests, and electrolyte panels. Advanced testing techniques involve immunoassays, spectrophotometry, chromatography, and molecular diagnostic methods. Clinical biochemistry laboratories employ automated analysers and high-precision instruments to ensure accurate, reliable, and reproducible results. Samples are collected under standardised conditions, processed promptly, and analysed by trained laboratory personnel. Results are interpreted by clinical biochemists or pathologists in conjunction with patient history, clinical findings, and other diagnostic investigations.

The insights provided by clinical biochemistry are crucial for early disease detection, risk assessment, and therapeutic monitoring. For instance, monitoring blood glucose and HbA1c is essential for diabetes management, while liver and kidney function tests guide medication dosing and detect organ dysfunction. Biochemical markers are also used to evaluate nutritional status, monitor chronic diseases, and support preventive healthcare. By providing precise and objective biochemical data, clinical biochemistry enables informed clinical decision-making, personalised patient management, and improved health outcomes. Its integration with other laboratory and clinical services makes it an indispensable component of modern healthcare.
