Audiometry

Audiometry

Overview

Audiometry is a specialised diagnostic test used to evaluate hearing ability and identify the type and degree of hearing loss. It plays a crucial role in the assessment of auditory function in individuals of all age groups, from infants and children to adults and the elderly. Audiometry helps in the early detection of hearing impairment, enabling timely intervention and prevention of further hearing deterioration.

The test measures a person’s ability to hear sounds at different frequencies and intensity levels. It is commonly used to diagnose conductive hearing loss, sensorineural hearing loss, and mixed hearing loss. Conditions such as chronic ear infections, age-related hearing loss (presbycusis), noise-induced hearing damage, otosclerosis, and congenital hearing disorders are routinely evaluated through audiometric testing.

Audiometry is performed in a sound-treated room using an audiometer operated by trained audiologists. The patient is asked to respond to a series of tones delivered through headphones or bone conduction devices. Speech audiometry may also be conducted to assess speech recognition and understanding at various sound levels. The results are recorded in the form of an audiogram, which provides a graphical representation of hearing thresholds.

The findings of audiometry guide clinical decision-making and treatment planning. Based on the results, patients may be advised to undergo medical management, surgical intervention, hearing aids, cochlear implants, or auditory rehabilitation. Audiometry is also essential for monitoring hearing status over time, particularly in patients exposed to occupational noise, ototoxic medications, or chronic ear diseases.

Audiometric services often work in close coordination with ENT specialists and speech and language therapists to provide comprehensive hearing care. By offering accurate assessment and early diagnosis, audiometry contributes significantly to improved communication abilities, social interaction, and overall quality of life for individuals with hearing impairment .
